A Special Thanks
Without the support of the local community, friends, peers, family, and professionals I would not have been able to carry out this program. Thank you to all the supporters and thank you to the families for trusting me with your children’s education. Last but not least, A special thanks to The Museum of Modern Art for their continued support and sponsorship!
Take Up Space
This summer 2022 my students and their family members participated in my curated museum tours highlighting sense of self, sense of belonging and art from Black Indigenous People of Color. I organized each tour with a lesson that scaffolded key pieces and probing questions to bring the students an opportunity to use their lens and experience to ask questions and connect ideas through the pieces they experienced. Through donations and museum sponsorships, we were able to sponsor all the tours for the students and their families, provide personal art kits and any supportive materials to foster the students continued interest in Art. My ultimate goal was to take up space in the museums and highlight specific exhibitions that center Black and Brown Stories. This year was special because my participants and families covered intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and socio-economic status. It is my goal to share experiences and learn from eachother.
Centering stories about US
Viewing cultural artifacts in the form of art and museum display adds an additional appreciation for one’s own culture. Every student brings a rich experience that enhances the learning for the students and especially the teacher! Too many invaluable memories and “AHA” moments were shared and as always we appreciate your continued support and look forward to many more years of learning and service.
